How to write a good llms.txt

An llms.txt file is written for AI, but the best ones read like a clear briefing for a new employee: who we are, what we do, and where to find the details.

The format

A # Title with your site or business name.
A > summary blockquote: the one or two sentences you'd most want an AI to repeat about you.
Optional paragraphs with key facts: locations, years in business, guarantees, specialisms.
## Sections of links, each written - [Title](URL): description.
An ## Optional section for secondary pages that can be skipped.

Tips

Be factual, not salesy. AI assistants quote facts; marketing superlatives get ignored.
Link to pages that answer real questions: pricing, services, service areas, FAQs, contact.
Keep it current. Update it when you add a service or change key details.
Pair it with schema markup and a clean sitemap for the best chance of being understood and recommended.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain Markdown file at the root of your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that gives AI assistants a concise summary of who you are and links to your most important pages. Think of it as a guided tour for AI, rather than leaving it to piece your site together from navigation menus and code.

Do AI assistants actually use llms.txt?

Adoption is still early and no AI company has committed to reading it for every request. It's cheap to add, can't hurt, and is increasingly used by AI tools and agents that read documentation, so many sites now publish one alongside robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

Upload it to the root of your website, so it's reachable at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, the same place as robots.txt. On WordPress you can upload it by FTP or your host's file manager, or use a plugin that serves it.

What should I include?

A one or two sentence summary of your business, then links to the pages that answer the questions people ask about you most: services, pricing, products, locations, FAQs and contact details. Each link should have a short description. Put less important pages under an "Optional" section.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may and may not access. llms.txt doesn't block anything; it's a summary that points AI tools to your best content. Use robots.txt to control access and llms.txt to guide understanding.
