How to use the break-even ROAS calculator

Most advertisers judge campaigns by ROAS alone, but a "good" ROAS means nothing without your margin. This calculator turns your unit economics into the two numbers that actually decide whether ads are profitable: break-even ROAS and maximum CPA.

1. Enter your per-order numbers

Use your average order value, not your highest-priced product. For costs, include everything it takes to deliver one order: cost of goods, packaging, pick-and-pack and shipping you pay for. Payment and platform fees are entered as a percentage of the order.

2. Read your break-even ROAS and max CPA

Break-even ROAS = order value ÷ gross profit per order. Max CPA is simply that gross profit. If your ads platform reports a ROAS below break-even, or a CPA above your max, the campaign is losing money on the first order.

3. Set a target margin

Breaking even isn't the goal. Enter the profit margin you want to keep after ad costs and the calculator gives you a target ROAS and target CPA to set as bid targets or campaign KPIs.

4. Check your real campaigns

Add your ad spend and the revenue attributed to it to see actual ROAS, POAS (profit on ad spend) and net profit. Remember that platform-reported revenue is often over-attributed, so compare against your store's own numbers where you can.

The formulas

  • Gross profit per order = order value − product & fulfilment cost − fees
  • Break-even ROAS = order value ÷ gross profit per order
  • Target CPA = gross profit per order − (order value × target margin)
  • Target ROAS = order value ÷ target CPA
  • POAS = (orders × gross profit per order) ÷ ad spend

What is ROAS?
ROAS (return on ad spend) is the revenue your ads bring in divided by what you spent on them. If you spend $1,000 and make $4,000 in sales, your ROAS is 4.0 (sometimes written 4x or 400%).
What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is the ROAS at which your ads pay for themselves exactly, with no profit and no loss. It depends on your margin: break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin. A product with a 25% margin needs a ROAS of 4.0 just to break even.
How do I calculate my maximum CPA?
Your maximum (break-even) cost per acquisition is the gross profit you make on one order: the order value minus product, fulfilment and payment costs. Pay more than that to acquire a customer and you lose money on the first sale.
Is a 2x or 3x ROAS good?
It depends entirely on your margins. A 3x ROAS is very profitable for a product with a 60% margin, and a loss for one with a 25% margin. That's why break-even ROAS matters more than any industry average.
Should I include repeat purchases?
This calculator measures the first order only, which is the safest way to judge a campaign. If customers reliably buy again, you can afford a higher CPA than the first order alone suggests. Use your customer lifetime gross profit as the order value to see that ceiling.
What is the difference between ROAS and POAS?
ROAS uses revenue; POAS (profit on ad spend) uses gross profit. A POAS of 1.0 is break-even. This calculator shows both, because two campaigns with the same ROAS can have very different profit.
