Ad copy limits at a glance

Google Ads & Microsoft Ads (responsive search ads)

    • Headlines: up to 30 characters each. Add at least 3 and up to 15; up to 3 show at once.
    • Descriptions: up to 90 characters each. Add at least 2 and up to 4; up to 2 show at once.
    • Display paths: two fields of up to 15 characters, shown after your domain.

    Meta (Facebook & Instagram)

    • Primary text: roughly the first 125 characters show before "See more" in most feeds.
    • Headline and description: truncated quickly, especially on mobile, so keep them short and front-load the key words.

    TikTok

    • Ad text: up to 100 characters, displayed over the video.

    LinkedIn

    • Introductory text: about 150 characters show before "see more".
    • Headline: keep to around 70 characters to avoid truncation.

    Writing tips

    • Put the benefit or hook in the first few words. That's the part everyone sees.
    • For Google, write headlines that make sense in any order, since Google mixes and matches them. Use Shuffle to test combinations.
    • Match the ad's promise to the landing page headline. Message match is one of the biggest conversion levers.

What are the Google Ads character limits?
For responsive search ads: headlines up to 30 characters (add 3 to 15), descriptions up to 90 characters (add 2 to 4), and two display path fields of up to 15 characters each. Microsoft Ads uses the same limits.
How long can Meta (Facebook & Instagram) ad text be?
Primary text can be long, but only around the first 125 characters show before it's cut off with "See more" in most feeds. Headlines and descriptions are also truncated quickly on mobile, so Meta recommends keeping them short. Lead with the most important words.
What is the TikTok ad text limit?
TikTok ad text can be up to 100 characters. Shorter usually performs better because it sits over the video.
Why does Google count some characters as two?
Google counts "double-width" characters, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, as two characters each. This checker counts every character once, so leave some spare room if you write in those languages.
Is the preview exactly what my ad will look like?
It's a close approximation of the standard layouts. Real ads vary by placement, device and the combination of headlines the platform chooses, so use the preview to catch truncation and weak combinations rather than as a pixel-perfect mock-up.
